Baldwin IV, Count of Flanders

Baldwin IV, born in 980 and known as the Bearded, was the count of Flanders from 987 until his death on 30 May 1035. He was the progeny of Count Arnulf II of Flanders and Rozala of Italy, belonging to the House of Ivrea. Baldwin IV ascended to the role of Count of Flanders following his father’s demise in 987, with his mother serving as the regent until he reached the age of majority.

Baldwin IV shifted his focus eastward, differing from his predecessors, and delegated authority over the southern part of his territory to the counts of Guînes, Hesdin, and St. Pol. His rule was marked by the acquisition of territories including Zeeland, Valenciennes, parts of the Cambresis, Saint-Omer, and the northern Ternois. Under his reign, extensive colonization efforts were undertaken along the Flemish coastline, and significant development was seen in Brugge’s harbour and city.
