Anne of Kiev

Anne of Kiev, born around 1030, was a princess of Kievan Rus and the daughter of Yaroslav the Wise and Ingegerd Olofsdotter. She became Queen of France in 1051 after marrying King Henry I. Her marriage was arranged to provide an heir for Henry, and she brought with her a dowry that included rich presents. Anne was crowned at Reims Cathedral, making her the first French queen to have her coronation there.

As queen, Anne had three sons with Henry: Philip, Robert, and Hugh. She is credited with introducing the Greek name "Philip" to Western European royalty. After Henry's death in 1060, Anne served as regent for their son Philip I, ruling alongside Baldwin V of Flanders. Her involvement in governance is evidenced by her name appearing in several charters from that period.

Anne's second marriage to Count Ralph IV of Valois in 1061 was controversial due to its bigamous nature and Ralph's excommunication. Anne continued her religious and cultural contributions, such as founding the Abbey of St. Vincent at Senlis. Her adherence to Greek Orthodox theology is mentioned in a letter explaining her dedication of the monastery.

Anne of Kiev died around 1075, with her death commemorated on 5 September. Her son Philip I succeeded her as the monarch of France.
