Anne of Denmark was born on 12 December 1574 at Skanderborg Castle, Denmark, and died on 2 March 1619 at Hampton Court Palace, Middlesex, England. She was the wife of King James VI and I and served as Queen of Scotland from 20 August 1589 and as Queen of England and Ireland from 24 March 1603 until her death. Anne married James at age 14 and had three children who survived infancy: Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales; Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia; and Charles I, King of England. Known for her independent streak, Anne engaged in Scottish factional politics and was a significant patron of the arts during the Jacobean age. Her health declined after 1612, leading to her withdrawal from the center of court life. Anne’s religious affiliation has been a subject of historical debate, with indications that she may have converted to Catholicism at some point in her life.
