Amaury de Montfort was born between 1242 and 1243 as the third son of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, and Eleanor of England, daughter of King John. He entered the priesthood at a young age, holding several ecclesiastical positions, including Treasurer of York Cathedral and canon in multiple cities. He also served as a papal chaplain.
Following the death of his father and brother at the Battle of Evesham in 1265, Amaury fled to France. He studied medicine and theology at the University of Padua and was indirectly implicated in the political conflicts of his time, including the murder of Henry of Almain by his brothers. Despite these associations, he was able to appeal for a return to the church and was later captured and then released by Edward I. He renounced his clerical career to become a knight and died, likely after 1301.
