Titles: Earl of Chester
Alphonso, the Earl of Chester, was the ninth child of King Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile. Born in Bayonne, Gascony, he was named in honor of his maternal uncle, King Alphonso X of Castile. His birth in a duchy claimed by Castile underscored the close ties between his parents and the Castilian royal family. Following the deaths of his elder brothers, John in 1271 and Henry in 1274, Alphonso became the sole male heir to the English throne until his untimely death just shy of his 11th birthday. Despite his young age, he had a household of his own and was engaged to Margaret, daughter of Floris V, Count of Holland. His premature death prevented the marriage and succession to the throne, deeply affecting his parents and the nation.
Death: Died at the age of 10 at Windsor Castle, buried in Westminster Abbey with his heart at Blackfriars, London.
