Adelaide of Maurienne

Adelaide of Maurienne, also known as Alix or Adele, was Queen of France through her marriage to King Louis VI, which lasted from 1115 until his death in 1137. Born to Count Humbert II of Savoy and Gisela of Burgundy, she was part of an influential family, with connections that included her uncle Pope Callixtus II and her first cousin King Alfonso VII of León and Castile.

As Queen Consort, Adelaide was exceptionally politically active, with her name appearing on 45 royal charters during Louis VI’s reign. She co-founded the monastery of St Peter’s at Montmartre with her husband. Following Louis VI’s death, Adelaide remarried Matthieu I of Montmorency and continued to participate in court and religious activities until her retirement to Montmartre Abbey in 1153, where she passed away the following year.
