Adelaide of Maurienne

Adelaide of Maurienne, also known as Alix or Adele, was born in 1092 as the daughter of Count Humbert II of Savoy and Gisela of Burgundy. She became Queen of France as the second wife of King Louis VI, whom she married on 3 August 1115. Adelaide was deeply involved in political activities, with her name appearing on 45 royal charters during Louis VI's reign.

Adelaide and Louis VI had nine children, including Louis VII of France. She was known for her religious benefactions, notably founding the monastery of St Peter's at Montmartre with her husband. After Louis VI's death, Adelaide married Matthieu I of Montmorency and continued her active role in the French court.

Adelaide of Maurienne died on 18 November 1154 at the age of 62 and was buried in the cemetery of the Church of St. Pierre at Montmartre. Her son, Louis VII, succeeded her husband as King of France.
