Abbess Eleanor of Brittany

Eleanor of Brittany was born in 1275 in England to John II, Duke of Brittany, and Beatrice of England. At the age of seven, she entered Amesbury Priory in Wiltshire, a priory of the Fontevrault order, where her grandmother, Eleanor of Provence, also resided. In March 1291, Eleanor took her vows and became a nun, later moving to Fontevrault Abbey in France. She became the abbess in 1304 and appointed a French prioress to Amesbury in 1309, a decision she later reversed upon the King's request.

In 1317, Eleanor was involved in a dispute over the Prioress of Nuneaton, which included appeals to the Pope and was resolved in 1328. She initially refused to reinstate her cousin Mary of Woodstock as visitor of Amesbury Priory until a papal mandate required it. Eleanor died on 16 May 1342 and was buried at Fontevrault Abbey. She was succeeded by another abbess of the order.
