Świętosława was a Polish princess and a member of the Piast dynasty. She was the daughter of Mieszko I of Poland and Doubravka of Bohemia, and the sister of Bolesław I of Poland. Her marriages to Scandinavian royalty included unions with Eric the Victorious of Sweden and Sweyn Forkbeard of Denmark. Through these marriages, she bore sons Olof Skötkonung to Eric and Harald II and Cnut the Great to Sweyn. The chroniclers of the time did not always provide her name, but she is believed to be the Polish princess they referred to.
The historical accounts of Świętosława’s identity are varied. Some Icelandic sagas refer to her as Sigrid the Haughty, while Snorre Sturlasson mentions a Gunhild of Wenden. Modern scholarship, including the work of Polish genealogist Rafał Prinke, often separates the identities of these women, with Prinke suggesting that Świętosława may not have been Sweyn’s Polish wife but rather the name of another family member. Despite the confusion, Świętosława’s marriages significantly impacted the political landscape of Scandinavia and the Slavic world.
