Ælfwynn was the daughter of Æthelred and Æthelflæd, rulers of Mercia. She was born around 888, shortly after her parents' marriage. Her father was often on campaign, and her mother took on more governance as Æthelred's health declined.
In 918, after her mother's death on June 12, Ælfwynn became the ruler of Mercia, known as the 'Second Lady of the Mercians'. Her rule lasted only a few months before she was deprived of control and led into Wessex. Manuscript C of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is the primary source documenting her deposition.
Ælfwynn's exact date of death is unknown, but she lived beyond 918. After her deposition, Edward the Elder succeeded her as the ruler of Mercia.
