Ælfgar, son of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and Godgifu, known as Lady Godiva, succeeded his father as Earl of Mercia in 1057. He also held the title of Earl of East Anglia after the exile of Earl Godwin of Wessex and his sons in 1051. Ælfgar's daughter was married to Welsh king Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, strengthening his political alliances.
Ælfgar was exiled in 1055, during which he raised a fleet in Ireland and allied with King Gruffydd of Wales. Together, they attacked Hereford, defeating the Earl of Herefordshire's forces and burning the town. This conflict was resolved diplomatically, and Ælfgar was reinstated as Earl.
Ælfgar died around 1062, with no specific cause of death or burial place mentioned. His titles and responsibilities were succeeded by others in the region.
