Ælfflæd (wife of Edward the Elder)

Ælfflæd was the second wife of Edward the Elder, King of the English. She was the daughter of an ealdorman named Æthelhelm, likely Æthelhelm of Wiltshire, who passed away in 897. Ælfflæd's marriage to Edward began after his first marriage ended around 899, and she attested a charter as the king's wife in 901.

Ælfflæd was not consecrated as queen, and her marriage to Edward ended in the late 910s. She had two sons, Ælfweard and Edwin, and five or six daughters, including Eadgifu, Eadhild, and Eadgyth, who married into European nobility. Ælfflæd commissioned a stole and maniple for Bishop Frithestan, which were later donated to St Cuthbert's tomb by Æthelstan.

Ælfflæd adopted a religious life after her marriage ended, retaining her estates and was buried at Wilton Abbey with her daughters. Her marriage to Edward was succeeded by his marriage to Eadgifu.
